Standard Type Foundry

If you live in Delhi and you’re a typophile, there is no way you would have not found your way to Standard Type Foundry already. Not very far from the Metro Station at Chawri Bazaar, it is a place to go to! A post about the Standard Type Foundry is long over due, but every time I sit down to write one, I realize that I haven’t clicked a single photograph in all my trips there.

Rummaging through some drawers in office a few weeks ago, I found the foundry’s catalogue. Till I make another trip to Chawri Bazaar, camera in hand, these images of the catalogue should be motivation enough to make me (and you) visit sooner –

.The sample text used to display the type in this catalogue are hilarious –

Lion and women are both dangerous.
Love endures only when the lovers love many things together and not merely each other.

And finally a piece of well-meant information about the price of metal type,

Remember that good type is made of good metal and cannot be purchased at scrap metal price.

Yet my favorite things in the catalogue are the scientific symbols, borders and blocks. Don’t miss the Hindu gods and the DTC logo in the last photograph.

For the uninitiated, Standard Type Foundry is at 992, 1st Floor, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Delhi 110006; this map should help you reach there.

Its great. I have some Devanagari and Gujarati references from Various type foundries from India as well as from MonoType. The feel of the paper & printing is way beyond the scanned or photographic image.
